Description
BDO Ireland’s Customs and International Trade team currently has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Manager to join our growing team.As a Senior Manager, you will work directly with a diverse portfolio of clients to navigate customs regulations, enhance cross-border operations, and support compliance programs. You’ll take a hands-on role in delivering high-impact projects, while also contributing to the strategic growth of the department through client relationship management, business and team development, and thought leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver customs and trade compliance consulting services to a diverse client base, including import/export diagnostics, customs reviews, and compliance strategy development
- Drive business development efforts by identifying new opportunities, building client relationships, and contributing to the growth of the practice
- Conduct classification (HTS), valuation, and origin analysis; advise clients on documentation, customs clearance, and risk mitigation
- Support clients in preparing for and responding to customs audits or appeals
- Perform trade data analysis and benchmarking to identify duty-saving opportunities (e.g., FTAs, customs warehousing, IPR/OPR, duty drawback)
- Draft and review internal procedures, SOPs, and manuals for client customs operations
- Collaborate closely with the Partner in charge and other Departments on client work
- Monitor regulatory changes and trade policy developments, producing client alerts or internal briefings for your client base
- Participate in proposal development and thought leadership
- Assist in mentoring junior team members and building internal tools/templates
- Represent the firm at industry events, networking opportunities, and client meetings to enhance visibility and generate new business leads
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- At least 8 years+ of experience in customs and international trade, ideally with a strong advisory or consulting focus.
- Proven experience in a Customs Consulting role.
- Strong technical understanding of customs rules (e.g., EU Customs Code, WCO guidelines)
- Practical experience with preferential origin, valuation, and classification.
- Confident communicator with excellent client-facing and report-writing skills; ability to present complex information clearly and professionally.
- Proficient in standard business software, particularly Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with data analysis tools is a plus.
- Understanding of using trade systems (e.g., SAP GTS, Oracle GTM) is an advantage.
- Experience advising or working with clients in sectors such as manufacturing, life sciences, or other highly regulated industries.
- Thorough understanding of Automated Import System (AIS) and customs declaration processes.
- Self-starter who thrives in a flexible, fast-paced environment and is confident in direct client interactions.
- Comfortable with business development and opportunity generation, including networking, identifying client needs, and contributing to proposals.
