Position Overview
As the Registered Intellectual Disability Nurse, you will take a key role within a residential care team supporting five adults with intellectual disabilities. You’ll work alongside the Person In Charge (PIC) and receive ongoing support from the wider management team. This hands-on role involves providing clinical oversight, coordinating daily care, and guiding staff to deliver safe, compassionate, person-centred care in line with HIQA standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily care routines as clinical lead and shift coordinator
- Mentor and support care and nursing staff, ensuring high standards of care and compliance with care plans
- Oversee medication administration and maintain clinical records
- Provide direct clinical care (e.g. PEG feeding, tracheostomy care, catheter care) as needed
- Promote independence and skill development in personal care and daily living
- Develop and deliver individualised programmes tailored to each service user’s needs and goals
- Build positive relationships with service users, families, and multidisciplinary teams
- Manage incidents, complaints, and safeguarding concerns professionally and effectively
- Support and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment
- Participate in team meetings and ongoing staff development
- Assist the PIC with audits and compliance with HIQA and Health Act 2007 standards
- Drive service users to appointments and community activities
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including nights and sleepovers
Qualifications & Requirements
- Registered Intellectual Disability Nurse with NMBI (essential)
- CORU registration or eligibility (desirable)
- Experience in disability or residential care settings
- Sound knowledge of HIQA standards, safeguarding, and risk management
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Full, clean driving licence (essential)
