Applications are invited for the position of Research Assistant with the Academic Unit of Neurology in Trinity College Dublin. The successful candidate who should personable, self-motivated and highly organised, will work with Irish ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)/MND (Motor Neurone Disease) Research Group, hosted in the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute's Academic Unit of Neurology and will be based across a hybrid combination of sites including Beaumont Hospital and Academic Unit of Neurology, Trinity College with some remote working. The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in a healthcare-relevant discipline, neuroscience, psychology or a related area. Post-graduate experience in research/fieldwork or clinical areas is desirable. Training in all relevant areas will be provided.
Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
- Supporting existing team members on various projects with EEG set-up and recording in St. James Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. Training would be provided to bring the successful candidate up to speed with the various protocols
- Involvement in recruitment of people with ALS to the Neurophysiology Research Programme in coordination with other research assistants in and around the weekly ALS/MND Outpatient Clinic in Beaumont Hospital every Thursday. This would also involve the maintenance of recruitment management files and liaising with the researchers as people agree to participate and the scheduling of EEG recording with recruited participants.
- Recruitment of ALS family members for EEG for the 'Pre-manifesting C9 Study'. This would involve following up on lists of people provided by other researchers within the group currently working with this familial group
- Arranging for the recording of EEG for the family member group above in conjunction with other team members who will help with the recording itself.
- Helping the research team establish the EEG recording equipment and protocols in Beaumont Hospital with a new EEG Rig
- Helping the research team with cognitive/behavioural screening in the ALS/MND Clinic as required. Training will be provided.
- Providing support for the collection of blood samples. This would requires phlebotomy training for which a course would be arranged for the successful candidate to complete.
- Providing support as required to existing data collectors for the collection of data for the ALS/MND Register and the Precision ALS Prospective Collection Projects
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Applicants should hold a minimum upper-second class (2:1) honours degree (or equivalent) in healthcare, neuroscience, psychology or a related area.
- A masters would be seen as an advantage
Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)
- At least some experience working in healthcare / related area
- Some experience of collecting structured data for research (essential) ideally in a healthcare setting (desirable)
- Some experience of EEG recordings (desirable)
Skills & Competencies
- Good communication skills

- Highly organised and detail oriented

- Ability to also work independently and flexibly
- Clean drivers licence (desirable).
