The Opportunity

Due to significant growth in our Water Business in Ireland and internationally, we are currently recruiting for a junior civil engineer to join our water team.

The position available is for a civil/structural engineer with 2 to 4 years’ experience and a background in the delivery of infrastructure projects. Ideally this experience would have been gained in the design/delivery of flood relief schemes or water infrastructure projects, but all relevant civil engineering experience will be considered. Candidates will be expected to have a sound understanding and experience of the multi-disciplinary nature of infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidates will be looking to further their career and gain invaluable experience within an established multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy in a position of responsibility.

This is a permanent position and offers the successful candidate long-term opportunities.


As a Civil Engineer at Arup, you will:

  • Prepare technical designs for projects in accordance with approved design standards and procedures in line with the delivery programme.

  • Ensure that relevant legislation, regulations, policies, strategies, and technical guidance is interpreted, followed and communicated across the team with guidance from senior members of staff.

  • Implement the appropriate QA procedures for all deliverables and ensure compliance with H&S requirements; and

  • Communicate effectively and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of individuals. This would typically include but is not limited to; water team colleagues and project managers, other internal design disciplines, clients and contractors.


Does this role inspire you?

We're looking for someone with:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering discipline is required for this role (equivalent to Level 8 in the Irish NFQ).

  • A Master’s degree would be beneficial but not essential.

  • Experience in the design of flood relief schemes, pumping stations and drainage pipelines will be an advantage.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to undertake structural calculations to support the design of flood defence elements using first principles and relevant structural modelling software.

  • Prepare and review design drawings using AutoCAD, Civil3D or GIS software in conjunction with project technicians.

  • An ability to prepare technical reports, correspondence, and other outputs in accordance with approved standards and procedures in line with the delivery programme.

  • Passionate about driving digital delivery on projects and keeping appraised of latest industry developments around digital and BIM.

  • Understanding of wider engineering project requirements e.g. geotechnics, utilities, risk management etc and ability to tailor civil engineering interventions to suit wider project aspirations.

  • Undertake site inspections during construction to ensure contractor compliance with the design requirements.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic and hydrological principles and relevant industry software.

  • Be aware of the Irish regulatory and planning framework, together with experience in the design and delivery of civil engineering projects through the planning process.

  • Communicate effectively and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of individuals. This would typically include, but is not limited to; flooding team colleagues and project managers, other internal design disciplines, clients and contractors.
