Role: Underground Geotechnical Engineer

An excellent opportunity has arisen within the Mine Planning & Scheduling section for an underground geotechnical engineer. As geotechnical engineer, you will be part of a team of geotechnical and backfill engineers reporting to the senior geotechnical engineer. The role involves a combination of office and underground work providing operational support on mine design, ground support and stability risk assessment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Geotechnical mapping and monitoring (including convergence/movement monitoring) of underground excavations
Design and develop ground support standards and rehabilitation plans for underground excavations to ensure stability and safety
Conduct geotechnical mapping and core logging to document rock mass characteristics
Review mine designs and plans to ensure they are consistent with rock mechanics principles and geotechnical standards.
Geotechnical modelling and risk assessment
QA/QC program (bolt pull-testing, shotcrete and backfill materials testing)
Assist in the development and delivery of ground control safety training programs to educate mine operations personnel
Perform other duties as required
Experience and Qualifications:
A Technical College or University Degree in Rock Mechanics/Mine Engineering or other relevant geoscience.
Preferably 1- 2 years geotechnical engineering experience from underground base metal mining. Graduate engineers may be considered.
Previous knowledge of and experience with longhole stoping mining method, mine design, ground support, and backfilling desirable
Exposure to modern mine design software such as Deswik and geotechnical software (Map3D and/or Itasca IMAT) an advantage
Skills and Capabilities:
Education, knowledge and skills required for this position
Knowledge of the mining cycle
A high level of attention to detail is required
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English
Strong interpersonal skills – an ability to influence and build relationships at all levels.
Demonstrates a willingness to drive new opportunities and continuous improvements
Computer literacy
Role model in EHS (Environment, Health and Safety)
Additional Info:
This role will be normal office hours Monday to Friday, on a 37.5-hour workweek.
There will be a degree of flexibility required as part of this role in line with operational requirements so work outside normal office hours may be required from time to time.
Clean drivers licence.
