About Tyndall:

Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in digital healthtech including medtech, biopharma. Tyndall’s ICT for Health Strategic Programme is driving an ABCD ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business, Clinical and Design thinking stakeholders), in which Tyndall researchers are working with academic leaders (national and international), many top companies in the medtech and pharma industries, and in collaboration with clinical scientists. This ensures that Tyndall research delivers impact in terms of clinical utility and commercial opportunity. Tyndall is host to both the Research Ireland IPIC (Irish Photonic Integration Centre) and Enterprise Ireland MCCI (the Microelectronics Circuits Centre Ireland), and is a collaborator in the Research Ireland Insight Centre for Big Data Analytics and the VistaMilk Centre (Smart Agritech Centre for the Dairy Industry). Tyndall also leads the ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub providing digital innovation services to SMEs and public service organisations.

Tyndall hosts Researchers-in-Residence from leading healthtech companies, and Digital Healthtech represents a substantial part of research activities across the institute. This reflects the growing opportunity for Tyndall’s key enabling technologies to enable predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory, precision medicine, through new generations of connected digital healthtech devices, and smart solutions for advanced healthtech manufacturing. Tyndall is a leader in the design, development and evaluation of emerging digital healthtech solutions, which require integration of a range of novel sensors, components and materials for additional functionality, while ensuring the prerequisite miniaturisation and cost constraints of the application scenarios are fully addressed. Tyndall acts as a gateway for healthtech industry customers, providing world-class facilities and expertise for the development of digital healthtech solutions, but also helping to identify technologies and expertise from outside Tyndall where applicable, to ensure technology development is enabled in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.

Purpose of the Role:

Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for the position of Senior Programme Manager in Bioelectronics and Digital Healthtech Strategic Programmes. You will be a member of the Strategic Programmes team responsible for developing and delivering selected aspects of the overall strategy of Tyndall. Reporting to the Senior Head of Group for Bioelectronics and Director of the ENTIRE European Digital
Innovation Hub, the successful candidate will:
  • Be responsible for the management of a portfolio of engagements between Tyndall and strategic industry, clinical and/or academic partners in sectors including diagnostics (in vitro and in vivo), connected health (including wearable technologies for monitoring health and wellbeing), therapeutics (including smart drug delivery systems), cardio/neuro (including neuromodulation and electroceuticals), surgical devices (including smart surgical instruments and minimally invasive devices), and advanced manufacturing (for both medtech and biopharma).
  • Partner with Tyndall Business Development, senior management, principal investigators and the research and other internal stakeholders as applicable, to support execution of technology commercialisation programmes in strategic health applications.
  • Programme manage the ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub, to engage enterprises and public service organisations in digital transformation, to drive collaboration with other EDIHs and national stakeholders, and to ensure the maximum digital transformation impact of the EDIH programme.
  • Support the Senior Head of Group for Bioelectronics to develop sector strategies and drive Strategic Programmes.
  • Expand Tyndall’s network of national/international collaborators.
  • Provide “needs-driven research challenges and targets” to the research groups, promoting a culture of innovation aligned to commercial opportunities as elaborated by industry partners, ensuring that all design activities adhere to relevant Quality System Regulations and design control and risk management requirements.
  • Work with Tyndall stakeholders to drive output quality (as defined by Tyndall KPIs) at high and improving levels.
Key Responsibilities:
  • To significantly increase the quantity, quality and impact of industry-related health programmes/projects within Tyndall.
  • To direct project management, execution and technology transfer functions for Tyndall’s industry-facing programmes in health.
  • To provide a technical liaison function to Tyndall’s industrial and academic partners in targeted areas of expertise in the area of technologies for health.
  • To assist, as required, with business development and client interaction/new business generation activities relating to Tyndall Strategic Programmes in Health.
  • To coordinate, develop and manage selected industry R&D programmes (under Tyndall’s ISO9000 Quality Management System).
  • To actively participate in sourcing appropriate funding to develop and manage a team of engineers, researchers and project managers to deliver professional, large-scale and sustainable, industry-focused research.
  • To support researchers, programme and project managers to:
    • Plan, design and manage complex, multi-disciplinary, multi-group research projects;
    • Prepare, price and negotiate proposals and contracts;
    • Develop innovative technology platforms based on relevant expertise and facilities available across all Tyndall Centres and within relevant Tyndall strategic academic or industry partners;
  • Develop and implement structures and processes for the professional engagement with industry encompassing:
    • Identification of large-scale, high impact opportunities.
    • Contact with target clients and affiliate organisations.
    • Development of statements of work, proposals with appropriate resourcing of staff, expertise and facilities.
    • Management of contract negotiation and IP agreements.
    • Efficient management and execution of projects to deliver on time and within budget.
    • Regular liaison with clients to discuss/review progress and address any changes/slippages to the work programme.
  • Work with PIs and other commercialisation and business development managers and external agencies (i.e. Research Ireland, IDA, Enterprise Ireland) to identify suitable industry clients (based on the synergy between Tyndall’s research strategy and client technology roadmaps) and arrange targeted visits/discussions with relevant Tyndall researchers
  • Follow-up and build strong commercial relationships as appropriate.
  • Identify and establish synergies for collaboration with industry across the entire Institute.
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise on advances and innovations in relevant research, products, patents, market trends and technology/industry roadmaps.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of research results to research partners, to scientific and engineering communities and to the Tyndall PR/Marketing function.
Essential Criteria:
  • A PhD degree in science or engineering, or equivalent in industry research experience, is essential.
  • Typically 10 years in R&D Programme management, including significant experience in managing projects with industry partners.
  • Strong technical competence in Bioelectronics and Digital Healthtech applications, including medtech and/or biopharma, with a track record of driving commercialisation of bioelectronics and digital healthtech intellectual property, e.g. licensing or spinouts.
  • Track record in driving strategy development for technology teams.
  • Track record in programme and portfolio management for large (>15 people) multidisciplinary R&D teams.
  • Track record of proposal management of large (i.e. >€1m) research project funding from national / international funding agencies / industry.
  • Track record of customer management and development.
  • Evidence of strong communication and negotiation skills.
