At Flipdish, we’re turning the tables in favour of independent restaurant and takeaway owners by providing them with the tools they need to make their lives easier. We offer a suite of powerful yet straightforward tech solutions along with real human support, helping our customers thrive on their own terms.
Everything we do is designed to make running a restaurant satisfyingly simple in a world that’s anything but.
About the Role
Join Flipdish’s Platform Enablement Team during a pivotal phase of modernisation and growth. We’re building the foundation for how teams at Flipdish design, develop, deploy, and operate modern, serverless, event-driven systems at scale. You’ll contribute directly to the Golden Path for engineering, shaping reusable infrastructure patterns that enable fast feedback cycles and ensure our platforms are secure, observable, and cost-effective by default.
This isn’t just internal tooling. You’ll work with a product mindset, treating developer experience as a first-class product. You’ll enable application teams to deliver faster, safer, and smarter, without reinventing the wheel.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Build and evolve Flipdish’s serverless platform
- Develop and maintain opinionated patterns and libraries using SST + CDK to support high-quality application development on AWS.
- Define and codify best practices (via code, documentation and Gen-AI rules) for AWS Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB and Cloudflare Rules and Workers.
- Partner with teams to help them adopt architectural patterns (including multi-account guardrails, observability, and testing).
- Define and scale platform capabilities
- Create reusable Infrastructure as Code (IaC) components, such as CDK constructs and aspects, that simplify compliance and deployment.
- Extend our GitHub Actions pipeline tooling to streamline releases, environments, and platform integrations for distributed ownership of pipelines.
- Build guardrails into the developer experience to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and safety are the default, not optional.
- Drive a product-centric platform
- Work closely with product engineers to understand pain points and accelerate delivery through automation, templates (including Gen-AI rules), and education.
- Apply tools like Cursor AI rules and MCP servers to drive improvements in defaults and accelerate iteration loops.
- Measure the impact of platform investments and prioritise work that maximises developer effectiveness and system resilience.
- Collaborate with a supportive, high-ownership team dedicated to long-term engineering excellence.
- Build, evolve and own shared services
- Work with the team on shared platform services used by all domain services, e.g. our distributed authorization service
- Identify opportunities to extract shared capabilities from our existing monolithic systems into domain services that all teams can use
- Participate in Product-Engineering-wide hack and build days to build a feature into the Flipdish products (even if outside the remit of Platform Engineering)
What We’re Looking For
- Solid software engineering skills and experience building cloud-native, production-grade systems
- Experience using AWS serverless services (Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, S3, SQS), and hands-on experience using CDK or SST.
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g Datadog, Dynatrace, Honeycomb, AWS CloudWatch etc.) and incident response practices.
- A pragmatic approach to infrastructure: you know when to abstract, when to standardise, and when to get out of the way.
- Understanding of CI/CD and experience with GitHub Actions or similar pipeline frameworks.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with product and engineering teams.
- Bonus: experience with running workshops and learning initiatives to align teams or to gather feedback
- Bonus: experience with Cloudflare (Workers, Rules, Durable Objects), Cursor AI or similar AI copilots, and platform product thinking.
Why Join Now
- Help shape the platform that powers thousands of restaurants - with impact from day one.
- Stay close to modern serverless patterns, developer experience innovations, and practical applications of AI in engineering workflows.
Who You’ll Be Working With
This role will be part of a small team called Platform Enablement, comprised of 3-4 Engineers with a strong background and expertise in IaC, CI/CD, Observability and Monitoring, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and backend engineering. The role will report to the Engineering Manager dedicated to the team, who will lead the team technically and oversee the platform as a product initiative.
What Success Looks Like in the first 6-12 months
- In the first month, you are expected to be part of deploying platform or backend code to production, as part of a pair programming session. Meanwhile, you will become familiar with our platform systems and gain a deep understanding of the product, as well as get to know the product teams and key stakeholders across the business.
- In the first 3 months, you will have provided tangible value to the teams by providing a reusable component (e.g. a CDK construct), or you have significantly improved the existing templates available to the teams, and you will be an equally contributing member of the team as the owner of the platform and shared services.
- Within the first 6 months, including the achievements of the first 3 months, you will have contributed to the platform in multiple ways (docs, Gen-AI rules, templates, platform services, tooling, and workshops) that enable teams to deliver and support high-quality software services. You will also have started to take ownership of a shared service that the team owns.
- In the first 12 months, it’s hard to predict how it will look. However, including what you have achieved in the first 6 months, you’ll look to grow in your role by building relationships with all product teams at Flipdish, being a reliable partner in creating products at Flipdish and building and operating shared services. You will evolve the platform to include emerging technologies and practices, such as those from the AI landscape. You will have played a big role in the adoption of the Golden Path by all teams and in building products aligned with the Engineering Operating Model and Target Architecture.
What Specific Challenges Might You Be Working On?
Flipdish is midway through an architectural modernisation: from monolithic native cloud services in Azure to serverless domain services. A subset of the following challenges (but not limited to) includes:
- Owning and enhancing the existing service templates and governance repositories with more tailored functionality for the product teams, given their feedback as they use the existing tools
- Effectively managing and monitoring Cloud & SaaS costs across Flipdish - whether distributing responsibility across teams with tools provided by the team, or central responsibility for platform costs.
- Encourage and enable the safe and easy use of AI both as a DX tool and as part of our products.
