You will be responsible for the product design concepts/ideas and concept development for industrial communications products globally for the next generation of ruggedised routers. You will also make recommendations for continuous Improvements in partnership with electrical and hardware engineering team, suppliers and supplier management teams, sales, service teams.

The Team Leader/Manager is a critical role in the company, ensuring the predictable flow of new designs and volume production such that our sales teams and customers can have the utmost confidence in products availability across the globe. They will be responsible for the scope, risks, dependencies, budgeting, and validation test planning as they concurrently lead development projects.

The role

Working as part of or with R&D teams, you will serve as both internal and external evangelist for our product design, manufacturability and manufacturing and the certainty of the execution timelines. You will be hyper-focused on the design, quality, conformity, and reliability of all our offerings.

You will take full ownership for the Design & Manufacturing Engineering activities for the market release of wireless routers developed in Westermo Ireland’s R&D Centre covering datacomms technologies including DSL, Wi-Fi, 4G-LTE and 5G, delivering.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a high degree of attention to detail, experience in a related field with expert-level proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and PDM systems. This along with excellent planning and organisation skills, as well as excellent communication skills and the ability to influence across engineering and customer teams.

Responsibilities and Tasks

You will have proven ability to seamlessly handle multiple projects and issues at one time, while providing detailed and timely follow-up between meetings and development stages. You will assume full responsibility for your projects by continuously assessing the progress and adjusting the project plan to ensure that goals are met, while regularly communicating progress.

You will create, own, and manage design plans for projects including work packages and resource (people and budgets) planning. Day-to-day tasks will include the following,

  • Develop design concepts using SolidWorks and prepare specifications encompassing immunity, thermal, climatic requirements, including tolerance stack-ups.
  • Conduct risk assessments, DFMEA, and both internal and external design reviews.
  • Produce engineering documentation such as detailed design drawings and bills of material to the highest industry standards; qualify vendors and components requesting quotes as necessary.
  • Collaborate extensively to optimise cost, performance, and assembly processes.
  • Schedule and manage regular update meetings to facilitate progress reporting regarding product design, development, testing validation, and production to facilitate decision-making, issue resolution, escalation of resourcing gaps, and mitigation plans when deviations occur.
  • Upon completion of designs, ensure thorough knowledge transfer and pricing clarity by communicating information effectively to manufacturing and operations teams.
  • Promote and embody Company Values with respect to Design for Excellence and Lean Principles.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date data within the Product Data Management system, and specify and source off-the-shelf components where appropriate.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and production lines to transition concepts into high-volume production, considering mechanical, electrical, and safety system requirements.
  • Optimise manufacturing performance by improving equipment, processes, and layouts, ensuring production targets are met efficiently with the highest standards of quality and safety.
  • Define and optimise the packaging of products to ensure safe, cost-effective, and efficient shipping to customers.
  • Represent engineering in factory reviews, audits, and management meetings as needed.
  • Mentor and support members of the manufacturing engineering team.
  • Forecast and manage budgets associated with design and manufacturing engineering activities.
  • Escalate issues that affect timeline, scope, quality, or budget.
  • Ensure all developments comply with established processes, policies, and systems.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
  • 3+ (5+ preferred). years of experience in mechanical design.
  • Strong design and mechanical intuition, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
  • Understanding of Design Qualification and Acceptance Testing at various phases of the development and release cycle.
  • Familiarity with design validation and thermal simulation set up and execution.
  • Team management experience a plus but not essential.
  • Experience in a low/medium volume/high mix environment.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and ‘Design For Manufacturing and Assembly’.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience facilitating project team meetings communication and decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional or horizontally aligned teams.
  • Strong technical writing skills and presentation skills.
  • A passion for excellence and proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and a growth mindset.
  • Strong self-motivation and a willingness to work occasional abnormal hours and travel domestically and internationally to ensure timely project execution.
