The post holder will report to the Chief Clinical Engineering Technician. 

 

They will also liaise and work, as required with other staff and grades within and outside of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department, on relevant issues including quality and safety, information and computer technology and systems.

 

Salary:

 

Appointment will be made on Principal Clinical Engineering Technician (€70,402 - €80,810) at a point in line with Government pay policy. 

 

Hours of work: 

Full-Time 35 hours per week

General Description of the Post

 

The Principal Clinical Engineering Technician, in conjunction with the Chief Clinical Engineering Technician and clinical engineering team, will lead development of clinical engineering within Beaumont. They will have a central role in equipment management, risk assessment, health and safety, and cost effectiveness in relation to electro medical equipment. They will also manage and provide clinical user support for electro medical equipment services. The post holder will be working in conjunction with the Chief Clinical Engineering Technician to develop the clinical engineering service from a risk and quality perspective, ensuring that medical technology is used safely and effectively across the hospital and that there is sufficient, appropriate technology in a safe working order.

Responsibilities

 

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring provision of technical support to electro medical equipment in departments across the hospital.
  • Developing systems of operation to streamline clinical engineering services and documenting associated processes. The post holder will be required to lead the development of Clinical Engineering PPPGs and KPIs
  • Have a good understanding of the Medical Devices Regulations and their application to the hospital environment. Participating in educating other hospital staff in relation to same.
  • Ensure medical device vigilance processes are managed within area of responsibility.
  • Apply analytical expertise to provide reports / analysis in relation to electro medical equipment. Prepare reports on equipment performance and life cycle costs
  • Ensuring a commitment to assuring high standards and striving for a user centred service.
  • Identify improvement opportunities within the Clinical Engineering Service.
  • Management of contract renewals for electro medical equipment, advising heads of department on the optimisation of the cost /benefits in service contracts.
  • Supervision of the senior and staff grade clinical engineers as assigned, and development of robust training for clinical engineers.
  • Ensuring the medical equipment inventory accurate and there is a complete record of work carried out on electro medical equipment.
  • Apply their ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, IT problems/issues associated with electro medical equipment to ensure maximum uptime of electro medical equipment.
  • Provide maintenance services for electro medical equipment in respect of its functional, electronic, optical, electrical and mechanical aspects to a standard of safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with its function and with professional standards.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Clinical Engineering Technician, to liaise with management and Heads of Departments on the purchase of new and replacement planning for existing electro medical equipment
  • Advise where required, on the acquisition of new technology and equipment, including development, planning and equipping of new services.
  • Support the nursing, medical and allied healthcare staff in the implementation of technology involved in patient care and provide user/staff training as necessary.
  • Act on issues with equipment performance in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and quality systems
  • Maintain knowledge of recent technical developments and undertake supplementary training to develop both knowledge and skills
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development and participate as required in education and training including mandatory training.
  • Participation in Beaumont Hospital quality assurance, risk management and safety programmes and carry out audits and compile KPIs as required.
  • Be professionally responsible for all aspects of the post and ensure all records in relation to their work are current and well maintained.
  • To actively drive and participate in academic, seminar programmes, in-service lectures and clinical meetings by presenting new and/or relevant topics in the field of healthcare as well as provide feedback from scientific meetings and external training sessions.
  • Represent the MPCE department at Beaumont fora as appropriate (e.g. Participation on committees as and where required).
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety requirements and regulations including maintaining the workshop areas, tools and test equipment. Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Legislation.
  • The speciality areas assigned may change periodically and the post holder is expected to be able to provide technical support across a broad range of patient-critical medical equipment.
  • Retain sufficient flexibility and adaptability in learning in order to ensure full contribution to improving services in response to changing health care needs.

  • (a) Candidates must,

     

    (i) Hold as a minimum a recognised qualification at National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), Level 7 or higher, in one of the following engineering disciplines;

     

    (i.1) Electronic, (i.2) Electrical, (i.3) Instrument Physics, (i.4) Industrial Instrumentation, (i.5) Applied Physics, (i.6) Mechanical, (i.7) Mechtronic, (i.8) Biomedical Engineering;

     

    or;

     

    (ii) Hold a recognised qualification at least equivalent to one of the above;

     

    and;

     

    (iii) Have a minimum of five years postgraduate satisfactory and relevant experience in an appropriate medical industrial field including at least three years in a clinical engineering environment;

     

    and;

     

    (b) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and administrative capacity) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

  • Age
