The role
Reporting to the Head of D&F and Energy, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for contributing towards the successful underwriting and management of the D&F book with the ultimate goal of ensuring that Fidelis’ interests are properly managed and protected.
Key accountabilities
- Develop strategic underwriting and financial planning for D&F insurance and contribute to the establishment and implementation of best practices for Fidelis
- Take a lead role in the underwriting for the D&F portfolio including the evaluation and presentation of submissions, analysing and interpreting exposures, determining coverage and contract language for D&F line business.
- Provide expertise and guidance in technical insurance matters, and, with oversight from the Head of D&F and Energy, oversee the development and/or enhancement of new and/or existing products and market entries
- Ensure products are competitive from a pricing and coverage standpoint and assure that products are in compliance with all insurance laws, regulations and Company strategic plans
- Manage, mentor and develop junior members of the team
- Directly use risk modeling and pricing tools to analyze opportunities, building models where necessary; work with modelling for final pricing analysis
- Originate, leverage, build and maintain broker and client relationships for the D&F line of business
- Prepare and issue quotes on an accurate and timely basis; present these in the UMCC
- Maintain strong working relationships across jurisdictional underwriting, modelling and planning teams
- Ensure compliance with internal and external underwriting regulations, liaising as appropriate with external bodies such as brokers, clients, auditors and regulators as required
Skills & experience
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years’ industry experience within reinsurance and specialty lines of business, particularly with D&F insurance
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage a portfolio of D&F including strategic and financial planning, enhancement and development of products, ensuring adequacy of pricing coverage, and compliance
- Capable of transacting on a range of non-traditional products such as Cat bonds, Swaps, ILWs, Retro, proportional and non-proportional products
- Proven success leveraging business skills to develop and attract new business, as well as expanding an existing portfolio
- Excellent analytical and statistical skills (testing may be required), with a working knowledge of and ability to interpret the outputs of existing broker and vendor Models
- Advanced Knowledge of Excel, @Risk, Access, and the ability to adapt quickly to understand or create pricing models for nontraditional specialty products. Excellent VBA skills and basic knowledge of Sql.
