(Permanent Contract, Full Time Hours)


The Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) in Deteriorating Patient and Sepsis is key to providing Clinical Guidance, Education, and Audit of the National Clinical Guidelines for INEWS2 (Irish National Early Warning Score 2), IMEWS (Irish Maternity Early Warning Score), EMEWS (Emergency Medicine Early Warning Score) and Sepsis Management Systems.


The role will support staff with ISBAR (Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation) communication, early recognition of patients at risk or who have deteriorated using INEWS v2, education and training, evaluation and audit. This key patient safety nurse manager role is key to validating the systems in place and improving processes to care for patients who have the potential to deteriorate.


Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that the responses to patient deterioration follow INEWS v2 and staff are supported in escalation to the appropriate senior decision maker. The ISBAR structured communication tool is to be used to ensure accurate therapeutic communication. The aligned care must be in line with Code of Conduct and Ethics for registered Nurses and Midwives 2025 utilizing the Scope of Practice framework.
  • Responsible for implementation of and monitoring of compliance with INEWS v2 scores, Sepsis Management for Adults (National Critical Guideline - NCG No. 26) and aligned escalation and response.
  • Prioritize the safety of individuals receiving care, including raising safety concerns, irrespective of source of these concerns (Code 25).
  • Communicate sensitively, effectively, honestly and appropriately considering the needs of the individual being cared for (Code 25).
  • Provide specialist expert knowledge and support acting as a resource to staff.
  • Be aware of their role as a professional and to undertake practice within the relevant framework.
  • Initiate the implementation of national guidelines in the areas of recognition and management of deterioration and sepsis in the acutely ill with relevant staff.
  • Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements regarding quality, risk and safety.
  • Facilitate the availability of evidence-based supporting data so that staff recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration and escalate care in accordance with local and national guidelines.
  • Provide an efficient, effective and high-quality service, respecting the needs of each patient, family and/or carer.


Eligibility Criteria -
Candidates must on the closing date of application:

  • Be a registered nurse on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives held by An Bord Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na hEireann (NMBI/Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) or be eligible to be so registered.
  • Be registered in the General Division of the register of Nurses and Midwives in which the application is being made.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years post registration full time recent experience in an acute hospital setting of which 2 years must be in the related area.
  • Candidates must have clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.
