The Dispensary Assistant plays a key role in supporting the pharmacy team by assisting with the dispensing of medications, managing stock, and providing excellent customer service. This role requires attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
Dispensing Support:
- Assist the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing prescription medications accurately and efficiently.
- Label and package medications appropriately.
- Maintain a clean and organized dispensary area.
Customer Service:
- Greet customers and respond to inquiries in a professional and friendly manner.
- Provide basic information on over-the-counter (OTC) products and direct customers to the pharmacist for further advice.
- Handle customer complaints or concerns with empathy and escalate issues when necessary.
Stock Management:
- Receive, check, and store pharmaceutical stock deliveries.
- Monitor stock levels and assist in ordering supplies to ensure the pharmacy is well-stocked.
- Rotate stock to ensure expiry dates are managed effectively.
Administrative Duties:
- Process prescription paperwork and maintain accurate records.
- Use pharmacy software systems to input and retrieve patient information.
- Handle cash transactions and operate the till, ensuring accuracy in financial transactions.
Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to all legal and regulatory requirements, including data protection and confidentiality policies.
- Follow health and safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
- Assist in maintaining the pharmacy’s compliance with professional standards.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other team members to ensure smooth operations.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: Leaving Certificate or equivalent; additional certification in pharmacy services or healthcare is a plus.
- Experience: Previous experience in a pharmacy or retail environment is preferred but not essential.
- Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic math skills for handling transactions and measuring medications.
- Proficiency in using computers and pharmacy software.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.

Working Conditions:
- This role involves standing for long periods, handling medications, and interacting with customers.
- Opening hours of Pharmacy are Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm
Career Progression:
With experience and further training, a Dispensary Assistant can progress to roles such as Pharmacy Technician, or Senior Dispensary Supervisor.
