Responsibilities
We're seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Machine Safety Design Engineer to join our team focused on the design, implementation, and validation of safety systems for bridge and gantry cranes. This role plays a critical part in ensuring compliance with the European Machinery Directive and other international safety standards while enabling efficient and reliable crane performance. The position may include occasional business travel within Ireland and overseas, the duration and location being defined by the nature of the visit.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Liaise with the risk assessment team to interpret safety function requirements and identify safety generate Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS), based on risk assessments and international standards (e.g., EN15011, EN ISO 13849, EN IEC 60204).
- Support the electrical and software design engineers to translate safety requirements into practical electrical design solutions, including safety circuits, safety PLC logic and selection of appropriate components.
- Review and validate safety related parts of the control system and carry out performance calculation using Sistema software application.
- Generate safety function descriptions, verification reports and compliance checklists.
- Provide support during functional testing, commissioning and validation of safety systems.
- Assist in maintaining standard safety design templates and blocks for uses across various products.
- Stay current with developments in machine safety standards, components and best practices.
- Participate in internal design reviews and provide input on safety related aspects of the system design.
- Liaise with technical documentation department to apply risk assessment outputs to instructions for use.
- Other duties will evolve and arise from time to time.
Qualifications Requirements and Experience
- A recognised qualification in engineering in the fields of electrical, software or mechanical engineering, functional safety, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of European Machine Safety Directive or internation standards in safety related parts of control systems is desirable.
- Third level qualification or suitable experience in health & safety or a related discipline is desirable.
- Qualification as a Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) and/or Certified Expert in Functional Safety (CEFS) is an advantage.
- 5+ years’ experience in a regulated industry, preferably in a design/manufacturing background.
- Strong communicator and influencer with experience of communicating at all levels within an organisation.
- Competent to coordinate a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to interpret safety requirements and specify risk reductions.
- Lateral thinker to achieve optimum solutions that are compliant with regulation and aligned with business goals.
- Excellent organisational skills
- Excellent IT skills
- Knowledge of Liebherr cranes or crane applications in general is a distinct advantage.
- Provision of training to close knowledge gaps will be considered.
