We seek a dynamic and motivated individual with the necessary skills and experience to identify mosquito species from larvae and water using a combination of DNA barcoding involving conventional PCR, Sanger Sequencing and Bioinformatic Analysis. The role will also involve testing eDNA samples for the presence of mosquito species using qPCR approach. The candidate will also be tasked with mapping the identified samples using GIS. It is also envisioned that the candidate will have ecological field work experience and the innovation to design and apply novel approaches to trapping mosquitoes for the capture of adult mosquitoes via a pilot study.
The role requires an experienced research assistant who has relevant experience in DNA extraction, conventional PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, DNA sequence analysis and associated bioinformatics knowledge and experience. In addition, demonstrated field experience, particularly in the development of novel field surveillance approaches is required. The candidate will also require skills in GIS, report writing and the preparation of manuscripts for peer review.
The candidate will join a dynamic team of researchers in SETU collaborating with team members in University College Dublin (UCD), DAFM and the National Museum of Ireland. As a result, the candidate will require good communication skills and an ability to work as part of a broad team.
