Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Toolmaker to lead tooling activities in our automotive metal stamping facility. This role focuses on the construction, maintenance, and optimization of both progressive and transfer dies, ensuring high performance, precision, and minimal downtime in a high-volume production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build, repair, and maintain progressive and transfer stamping dies to tight tolerances.
- Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of die-related issues during production.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to support new tool launches and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Interpret complex technical drawings, CAD models, and GD&T specifications.
- Operate a variety of manual and CNC machines (e.g., mills, lathes, surface grinders, EDM) for tool fabrication and repair.
- Modify tooling to improve part quality, reduce cycle time, or accommodate engineering changes.
- Mentor and train junior toolmakers and apprentices in best practices for both progressive and transfer tooling.
- Maintain detailed records of tool maintenance, modifications, and performance metrics.
- Ensure all work complies with safety, quality, and productivity standards.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in tool and die making, with a strong focus on automotive metal stamping.
- Expert knowledge of progressive and transfer die construction, function, and maintenance.
- Proficient in reading blueprints, CAD drawings, and using precision measuring instruments.
- Skilled in machining, hand-fitting, welding, and heat treatment processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or lead a team.
- Completion of a certified Tool & Die apprenticeship or equivalent technical training.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Mastercam).
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of ISO/TS 16949 or IATF 16949 quality standards.
