Job Title: Registered General Nurse/Registered Operating Department Practitioner
Location: Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo
Reports to: Theatre Manager
Accountable to: General Manager
Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Job Summary:
The post-holder will provide high quality direct patient care within the Hospital’s Theatre in the following in a range of surgical specialties peri-operative areas:
Flexible working arrangements conducive to a work/life balance
Preferably 3 years Theatre/Anaesthetic/PACU experience
Varied work as a multi-disciplinary professional in the peri-operative setting
Ongoing in-house education to ensure best practice and CPD
Key Responsibilities:
To provide skilled care and to demonstrate a high standard of practice in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care
To ensure that care is delivered as per hospital policy
To participate in the ‘Induction Programme’ of nursing and other clinical staff, as applicable, after appropriate training
To ensure that custody, administration and recording of medication are in accordance with hospital, and NMBI/HCPC guidelines
To inform the Theatre Manager of any matters affecting the professional standard of patient care
Participating as a scrubbed member of the Theatre team and carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments, and needles, in conjunction with a second RODP/RGN and reporting on the same to the Surgeon
Acting as a circulating member of the Theatre team
Assisting with other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of Theatres
Assisting in the compilation of the Theatre register
Aiding the Surgeon as required
Checking, witnessing, and administering controlled and scheduled drugs under the professionals own scope of practice
Anaesthetics/PACU
Use specialist knowledge to provide individualized patient care of a physiological and psychological nature to ensure that the patient received the highest standard of care. Demonstrate skills in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care
Understand the significance and importance of pre-operative assessment and investigations including fasting guidelines and the anaesthetic consequences of co-morbidities
Understand the principle of airway management in both adult and paediatric setting, potential difficulties and appropriate equipment required
All routine safety checks on anaesthetic equipment are carried out in accordance with AAGBI & manufacturers checklist, which is attached to the anaesthetic machine and is used prior to all operating lists and includes; the anaesthetic delivery system, filters connectors and airway devices, suction, scavenging, monitoring and accessories
Preparation of the anaesthetic environment, including specialist knowledge of equipment, routine and essential, and appropriate actions required in the event of the failure of said equipment
Understanding of drugs and fluid therapy required, and associated equipment.
Understand Local, regional and general anaesthetic techniques, and how to prepare and assist in their delivery
Preparation and assembly of the operating table, its appropriate attachments, and safe patient positioning
Implement infection control measures as per theatre and hospital policy. Ensure items for disposal are correctly bagged/binned and ready for collection as per waste disposal policy.
Adheres to local and national policies and procedures and takes part in Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation process
Replenish sterile stocks as appropriate ensuring stock rotation
Are responsible for the ongoing professional development & maintain registration with professional body and provide proof of same for records. Take part in all mandatory training and attend in-house refresher training by colleagues and anaesthetist
Report any faults of equipment to the Theatre manager or nurse/RODP in charge of list.
Undertake any other duties within the scope of the post as agreed with the Theatre Manager
Participate in department specific quality improvement activities within KPHS.
The RODP/RGN must work at all times within their scope of practice.
Act immediately in contacting the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) team if a patient requires resuscitation as per policy.
Use positive communication skills when interacting with patients and relatives.

To assist the Theatre Manager with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery
Standard of Care:
To deliver high quality patient care that is clinically effective, evidence-based and appropriate
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care
To ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
Working alongside the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure the safety of patients at all times
To administer medicines in accordance with NMBI guidelines and hospital policies and procedures
To keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
To demonstrate and organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks
To recognise when colleagues need assistance and offer practical support
To work in a way that minimises risks to the health, safety and security of own self and others
To prepare appropriately for the care / intervention / treatment to be undertaken including the risks to be managed
To take the appropriate action to manage an emergency, summoning assistance immediately when this is necessary
Communication:
To communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team throughout the hospital
To co-ordinate patient care and liaise effectively with other disciplines involved
To maintain patient confidentiality at all times
To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives regarding patient care and treatment
Health & Safety:
To be aware of the hospital policies and practice in accordance with regulations & attest to same on the hospital electronic platform
To ensure pre-operative checks are carried prior to commencement of any anesthetic or surgical procedure
To prepare the patient psychologically and physically for any planned procedure.
To ensure that hospital policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to the checking of swabs, instruments, needles etc. and to report any discrepancy to the Anesthetist / Surgeon / Theatre Manager or senior member of theatre staff on duty.
To support others in maintaining health, safety and security
To respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents relating to the intervention or treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency, using the hospitals current event reporting system
To accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards, together with their likely causes
To identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others
To report to the Theatre Manager any reportable incident or accidents involving staff, patients or visitors
To attend annual statutory training in Fire, Manual Handling, Infection Control and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation and any other training deemed necessary
To report any defective or faulty equipment to the Theatre Manager, as appropriate
To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Theatre/Recovery area
Education:
To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care
To maintain and update own professional development
To supervise qualified and unqualified staff
To attend annual pre-registration assessment update sessions
To report on study days/courses attended to other members of theatre staff
·To rotate onto various shifts, as required, for professional update, to ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with the Personal Development Plan agreed during the annual appraisal
To share updated skills with night duty staff (if applicable) to further improve continuity of patient care
Management:
With appropriate training and support, to take charge of a shift without direct supervision
To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and reporting, as required
To participate in the on-call rota for the department

Essential Criteria:
Must be a Registered Nurse with NMBI or Registered Operating Department Practitioner with the Health Care Professions Council
Desirable Criteria:
Have at least 3 years’ experience of working in the theatre area within the last 5 years.
