As our new Head of Department for Project and Programme Management, you will be part of the Ramboll Transport team in the UK & Ireland. You will be responsible for heading up a multidisciplinary team covering Project and Programme Management, Commercial, Digital and Production Management and Sustainable Solutions to successfully deliver a wide range of diverse projects while driving business growth. You will join a supportive and collaborative culture and environment, allowing you to develop and grow in your role.

The role will require the successful candidate to drive the external focus for the team and develop a Business Development & Growth Strategy to realise the ambition to growing the Departments external revenue streams and growing their own client base. You will bring an established industry network and be involved in client engagement and development. You will also be responsible for establishing a professionally accredited chartership path for the team, providing external recognition that can be offered to clients. Your internal responsibilities will include leading the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects across the Transport portfolio, and actively contributing to the operational performance of the Business Unit and driving business growth.

Our portfolio includes clients within the public and private sector and our multi-disciplinary teams assist our clients and external collaborators in all phases of a project – from developing business plans and strategic planning to selecting the right solution and all way through the execution of the project.

You will be a significant contributor to the Transport leadership/management group, where you and together with the other Heads of Department, will contribute to setting the strategic priorities that will ensure our continuous growth.

Your key responsibilities will be:

Business Development & Growth Strategy

  • Develop a Business Plan outlining a Development & Growth Strategy for the Department by growing new external revenue streams and client base.
  • Identify and capitalize on new business opportunities, expanding the company’s market share.
  • Build and nurture client relationships, ensuring repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Lead proposal and tender preparation, positioning the consultancy competitively in the industry.
  • Represent the company at industry events, networking functions, and professional forums.
  • Previous experience and industry connections in the Water and Energy sectors would advantageous.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Act as the primary point of contact for key clients, ensuring expectations are aligned and met.
  • Liaise with senior management to report on project performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Foster collaboration between internal departments to enhance service delivery.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and develop a high-performing project management team, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and mentoring of project managers to ensure professional growth and expertise.
  • Set performance objectives, conduct appraisals, and ensure continuous improvement in project delivery.

Financial & Commercial Oversight

  • Manage departmental budgets and ensure financial targets are met.
  • Drive profitability through efficient resource allocation and cost management.
  • Contribute to pricing strategies, contract negotiations and change management to maximize revenue.
  • Drive improved profitability and operational performance across the delivery of projects in the Transport portfolio.

About you

  • Business Acumen: Strategic mindset with a track record of identifying growth opportunities and securing new business.
  • Leadership & Communication: Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams, negotiate with stakeholders, and present ideas effectively.
  • Project Management Expertise: Proven experience in successfully managing complex projects in an engineering consultancy or similar environment.
  • Risk & Quality Management: Ability to anticipate challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Sustainability: Strong interest in helping lead the integration of sustainable and low carbon solutions and supporting effective communication of Ramboll as the Partner for Sustainable Change.
  • Educational Background: Degree in engineering, project management, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) are advantageous.
