We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lighting Designer to develop and implement effective outdoor lighting solutions that enhance public safety, visibility, and aesthetics. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design of outdoor lighting systems for public spaces such as streets, parks, roads, and pedestrian areas.
This role involves creating lighting layouts using CAD and lighting design software (such as Lighting Reality), calculating photometric values, and coordinating with engineers.
Responsibilities:
Design lighting layouts using photometric software (e.g., Lighting Reality).
Calculate optimal pole spacing, mounting heights, and luminaire types.
Specify energy-efficient lighting (e.g., LED fixtures).
Ensure designs meet illumination standards (e.g., CIE, IES, BS EN 13201).
Coordinating with Local Authority Engineers & Line Manager.
Consider environmental impact (e.g., light pollution, energy consumption).

Required Education/Qualifications/ Certifications:
- Exterior Lighting Diploma awarded by the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP) Exterior Lighting Diploma (Modules 1-4) or 5 years’ experience on Public Lighting Projects
Experience:
- Previously held a Lighting Designer position
- Experience on Public Lighting Design or PFI projects
- Software proficiency in Public Lighting Reality software with min 2 yrs experience,
- Excellent communication skills are crucial along with analytical and organisational skills.
- Good communication and present in English, both written and verbally
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excell
- Proven track record working in a team environment, work independently and take instructions
- Enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills if required
Required Skills & Competencies:
Lighting Design Principles
- Understanding photometrics, light distribution, glare control, colour temperature, and uniformity.
- Ability to design for different environments (roads, parks, carparks, etc.).
CAD and Design Software Proficiency
- AutoCAD, Lighting Reality, or other lighting simulation tools.
- Knowledge of Lighting Standards & Code
- Familiarity with IS EN 13201- 2:2015 / BS5489-1:2020
- Understanding of Dark Sky compliance and energy efficiency standards.
Person Specification
Education requirements:
Level 8 Degree in Electrical / Project Management or Energy/ Mechanical.
PMP, PSCS, and electrical certifications highly desirable.
Level 6 Craft Electrical Certificate desirable
Experience:
5+ years in electrical engineering, project management experience in electrical projects in the construction industry.
